En 1984, Johnny Cash a invité Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings et Kris Kristofferson à jouer sur son émission spécial Johnny Cash Christmas enregistré en Suisse. De retour à l’hôtel, ils ont commencé à jammer et à passer du temps ensemble, et c’est ainsi que le groupe The Highwaymen est né.
