Sous la plume de Glazounov, le violoncelle du jeune soliste canadien à la renommée internationale, Bryan Cheng, se fait ménestrel et chante avec mélancolie les amours courtoises du Moyen Âge. Puis, avec les Variations sur un thème rococo, il est caméléon, changeant de voix pour développer avec une virtuosité toujours plus impressionnante le thème de Tchaïkovski, inspiré par la musique du 18e siècle.

C’est ensuite au tour de Chostakovitch de puiser dans l’histoire pour sa Symphonie no 11, dirigée par l’un des chefs les plus importants de sa génération, Louis Langrée. Le compositeur y raconte le funeste Dimanche rouge de 1905, quand les troupes du tsar ont violemment réprimé une première tentative de révolution en tirant sur la foule affamée, rassemblée devant le palais d’Hiver.
