Back in Montreal, much to our delight, Asia’s leading contemporary dance company takes us on a dizzying sensory journey inspired by a mysterious lunar phenomenon. Cheng Tsung-lung, artistic director of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan since 2020, observed a sparkling ring around the moon in the sky over Iceland. Caused by ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, the illusion is said to predict an impending storm and, on a deeper level, to portend a time of change. That is the premise of Lunar Halo, the result of a perfect symbiosis with the hauntingly ethereal music of the legendary Icelandic band Sigur Rós and a pretext for exploring the points of tension in an uncertain world, especially our cyber-dependence. How can the body and technology coexist? Interacting with huge video projections, Cloud Gate’s 13 brilliant dancers, trained in internal martial arts as well as an eclectic range of dance forms, deliver a stunning performance.

De retour à Montréal pour notre plus grand plaisir, la compagnie phare de la danse contemporaine en Asie nous entraîne dans un vertigineux voyage sensoriel, inspiré par un phénomène lunaire mystérieux. Cheng Tsung-lung, directeur artistique de Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan depuis 2020, a pu observer dans le ciel islandais un mystérieux anneau de lumière étincelant autour de la lune. Ce phénomène, généré par des cristaux de glace en suspension dans l’air, est un présage de tempête ou encore, un signe plus inquiétant de changement imminent. Telles sont les prémisses de Lunar Halo, fruit d’une parfaite osmose avec la musique éthérée et hypnotisante du légendaire groupe islandais Sigur Rós, et prétexte à explorer les lignes de tension d’un monde vacillant, particulièrement notre cyberdépendance. Comment le corps et la technologie peuvent-ils coexister ? En interaction avec d’immenses projections vidéo, les 13 brillantissimes danseuses et danseurs de Cloud Gate, rompu·e·s aux arts martiaux internes en plus de leur formation en danse très éclectique, livrent une performance stupéfiante.
