Enjoy an afternoon of classics and soulful reflections with the radiant soprano Nicole Jordan and award-winning pianist Jennifer King. This program showcases George Gershwin’s iconic "Summertime" and "Fascinating Rhythm," a jazzy treasure that pulses with energy and charm. R. Nathaniel Dett’s soul-stirring "Ho Everyone That Thirsts" offers a profound spiritual resonance, and Samuel Barber’s "The Monk and His Cat" and "Sure on This Shining Night" are tender pieces that invite quiet contemplation. "I Hate Music!"—selections from Leonard Bernstein’s "A Cycle of Five Kid Songs for Soprano"—adds a whimsical, amusing take on life through a child’s eyes, brimming with playful charm, while Charles Ives’ "Songs My Mother Taught Me," delivers a poignant homage to maternal wisdom. At the piano, King shares a deeply moving solo take on Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child". A Canadian born in Trinidad and Tobago, Nicole Jordan is a singer-scholar with a global reach. She brings her versatile voice to each work, informed by her rich heritage and international career across opera, chamber music, and innovative musical theatre. Alongside host Jennifer King’s masterful pianism, this concert promises a journey through melody, rhythm, and storytelling that’s sure to resonate long after the final note. Co-presented with the Halifax Central Library as part of our Sensory-Accessible Concerts series, this concert is thoughtfully designed with sensory-friendly adaptations to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.
